Westfield Sydney City

The Westfield at Pitt Street Mall, Sydney, a collaboration between John Wardle Architects, Japanese interior design studio Wonderwall and Westfield’s design team, proves how successful collaborative design can be. The design is inspired by the proximity to the unusual yet iconic Sydney Observatory Tower with its very slender circular tensile structure and the design teams desire to create flexible floor plates that maximize the views.

For the interiors of the retail centre, Westfield appointed Wonderwall, famous for their eye-catching retail interiors around the world. With extensive experience and expertise in designing retail stores, Wonderwall, nevertheless, had a challenge before them, as it is the studio’s first shopping centre. This meant the approach had to incorporate a more long-lasting space that would not age. This is where Alpolic/fr came into the design equation. Our reflective stainless steel composite material was used on the escalators on all levels and on the elliptical columns throughout the mall to make the space feel more open and light. Moreover, the interior fit out meets all the requirements for Six Star Green Star Office by design.

“I tried not to create something decorative and surprising – instead I tried to do delicate, nicely done design that can be loved by a lot of audiences.” – Masamichi Katayama, Wonderwall
